The city and its beaches

Visakhapatnam, often called Vizag, runs along the coast, and the beach road links most of what visitors see.

  • Visakhapatnam is the largest city in Andhra Pradesh, between the Eastern Ghats and the coast of the Bay of Bengal.[1]
  • Beaches along its coastline include RK Beach and Rushikonda Beach.[1]
  • INS Kursura, a submarine of the Indian Navy commissioned in 1969 and decommissioned in 2001, has been a museum on RK Beach since August 2002.[2]

Kailasagiri

The hill park gives the widest view of the city and the coast.

  • Kailasagiri is a hilltop park of 380 acres at a height of 173 m, overlooking the city.[3]
  • A ropeway 350 m long carries visitors to the top of the hill.[3]

Borra Caves and Araku Valley

The caves and the valley are a full day out of the city by road.

  • The Borra Caves are a limestone cave system in the Ananthagiri hills of the Araku Valley, with stalactites and stalagmites.[4]
  • Araku Valley is a hill station about 111 km from Visakhapatnam.[5]

Practical tips

  • Keep the beach road and Kailasagiri for one day and Araku Valley for another.
  • Start early for Araku Valley; it is a hill road and a long day.
  • Ask for the hill-station charge to be included in your quote for the Araku trip.
