About Madurai

Madurai, on the banks of the Vaigai River, is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in India and is often called the cultural capital of Tamil Nadu. Life in the old city revolves around the Meenakshi Amman Temple, whose towering painted gopurams can be seen from across town.

Beyond the temple, visitors see the Thirumalai Nayak Palace and the Gandhi Memorial Museum, and try the city's jigarthanda and jasmine. The Chithirai festival in April and May is the biggest event of the year.
