About Hosapete

Hosapete, also known as Hospet, is the headquarters of Vijayanagara district, on the Tungabhadra River. The town grew up as a suburb of the Vijayanagara capital and is now a centre for sugar and iron ore.

It is the nearest town to Hampi, only about 13 km away, so most visitors to the ruins stay here. The Tungabhadra Dam and its gardens are on the edge of town. Jindal Vijaynagar airport at Toranagallu and the railway station make Hosapete the usual arrival point for Hampi.
