About Badami

Badami, once called Vatapi, was the capital of the Badami Chalukyas from the 6th to the 8th century. The town sits in a red sandstone gorge around Agastya Lake, with four cave temples carved into the cliffs above it.

The caves, with their carvings of Vishnu, Shiva and Jain teachers, and the Bhutanatha temples on the lake are the main sights. Pattadakal, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and Aihole, called the cradle of Indian temple architecture, are short drives away, so most visitors see all three in one or two days. The cooler months from October to February are the best time to go.
