Tirupati and Tirumala

Tirupati is the city in the plains, and Tirumala is the hill area above it where the temple stands. Most visits involve reaching Tirupati first and then travelling up to Tirumala.

  • Tirupati is a city in Andhra Pradesh and the headquarters of Tirupati district.[1]
  • Tirumala, a suburb in the hills, is home to the Sri Venkateswara Temple, dedicated to Venkateswara, a form of Vishnu.[1][2]
  • The temple is administered by Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD).[2]

Getting there by road

From Chennai, a round trip within two days is practical. From Bengaluru the drive is longer, so you may prefer to stay overnight.

  • Tirupati is about 150 km from Chennai and about 250 km from Bengaluru.[1]

Adding Srikalahasti

The Srikalahasteeswara Temple is close enough to combine with a Tirupati visit on the same trip.

  • The Srikalahasteeswara Temple is in Srikalahasti, about 36 km from Tirupati, and Shiva is worshipped there as Vayu, the air element.[3]

Practical tips

  • Temple arrangements such as darshan bookings and rules for visitors are set by the temple authorities and can change. Check the latest information with TTD before you travel.
  • Share your darshan time when you plan the trip so the pickup can be worked back from it.
  • Keep some flexibility in your return time, as temple visits can take longer than expected.
