Salem

Salem is the base for both the hill station and the dam.

  • Salem is on the banks of the Thirumanimutharu River and is surrounded by the Eastern Ghats.[1]

Yercaud

Yercaud is the nearest hill station to Salem and works as a day trip or an overnight stay.

  • Yercaud is a hill station in Salem district, in the Shevaroy Hills of the Eastern Ghats, at an altitude of 1,515 m.[2]
  • Its highest point is the Servarayan temple, at 1,628 m.[2]
  • Coffee plantations were established in Yercaud in the 1820s.[2]

Mettur Dam

The dam is a separate trip from Yercaud.

  • Mettur Dam is built across the Kaveri river where it enters the plains, and is the largest dam in Tamil Nadu.[3]
  • It was built in 1934 and took nine years to complete. There is a park at the base of the dam.[3]

  • The road up to Yercaud is a hill road; ask for the hill-station charge to be included in your quote.
  • Carry a light jacket for Yercaud, which is cooler than Salem.
