The city

Mangaluru sits between the sea and the hills, and most of what visitors come for is close to the coast.

  • Mangaluru is a port city between the Arabian Sea and the Western Ghats, about 352 km west of Bengaluru.[1]
  • The Netravati and Gurupura rivers encircle the city: the Gurupura flows around the north and the Netravati around the south.[1]

Panambur Beach

The beach is an easy late-afternoon trip from the city.

  • Panambur Beach is about 10 km north of the city centre and is the most visited beach in Mangaluru.[2]
  • Trained lifeguards patrol the beach, and its attractions include jet ski rides, boating and food stalls.[2]

Kadri Manjunath Temple

The temple is on the Kadri hills, inside the city.

  • The Kadri Manjunath Temple is said to have been built in the 10th or 11th century and was converted to a complete stone structure in the 14th century.[3]

Food

Leave time for a meal; the coast has its own cooking.

  • Mangalorean cuisine is known for fish and chicken dishes such as anjal fry, chicken sukka and chicken ghee roast.[1]

Practical tips

  • Go to the beach in the late afternoon and stay for the sunset.
  • Keep the car for the day if you want to combine the temple, the beach and a meal in town.
  • Roads from the coast into the Western Ghats are slower than the distance suggests; allow extra time.
