About Udupi

Udupi is a temple town on the Karnataka coast, centred on its Krishna Temple, where the deity is seen through a small window called the Kanakana Kindi. Eight monasteries, the Ashta Mathas, take turns to manage the temple, changing hands every two years in the Paryaya festival.

The town also gave its name to Udupi cuisine, served in vegetarian restaurants across India. Malpe beach and St Mary's Island, with its unusual basalt columns, are close by, the university town of Manipal is next door, and the Kollur Mookambika Temple is about two hours away. Mangaluru airport is about an hour south.
