Gandikota is a village with a historic fort on the Penna River, where the river cuts a deep red-rock gorge, often called the Grand Canyon of India. The fort, held by the Pemmasani Nayaks in Vijayanagara times, contains a mosque, a granary and the Madhavaraya and Ranganatha temples.
Most visitors come for sunrise or sunset over the gorge, and some camp at the edge overnight. The Belum Caves and the Kadapa temples are within driving distance. Gandikota is remote, so a car with driver for the day, or as a stop on a longer trip, is the easiest way to see it.
